It is completely normal for a DC motorto feel warm during operation. Every motor generates heat as a byproduct of electrical resistance and mechanical friction. Why Does a DC Motor Get Hot?

Heat comes from three main sources:

Copper losses - Current flowing through the motor windings produces heat.

A DC Gear Motor with a metal gear for a DC motor gearbox also generates some heat from gear mesh friction, though usually less than the motor itself.

What Temperature Is Safe?

Safe case temperature (housing): Up to 65-75°C (149-167°F) you can touch briefly but not hold for long.

Maximum winding temperature: Class B - 130°C, Class F - 155°C, Class H - 180°C. You cannot measure this without a thermocouple or thermal camera.

Practical rule of thumb for users:

If you can keep your finger on the motor housing for 5–10 seconds without burning, the temperature is generally safe. If it instantly feels too hot to touch, or you smell insulation burning, stop immediately.

For a DC geared motor running continuously, many manufacturers specify a maximum case temperature of 80°C. Check your datasheet - a good metal gear for a DC motor unit will often have a thermal rating.

When to Worry

Excessive heat - Housing above 90°C (194°F).

Smoke or burning smell - Immediate stop.

Degraded performance - Torque drops significantly as motor heats (magnets lose strength).

Brushes sparking excessively - In a DC brush motor, high temperature accelerates brush wear.

How to Keep Temperatures Safe

Operate within rated torque and current.

Provide ventilation or forced cooling.

Use a duty cycle.

Choose a larger DC geared motor if your load requires continuous high torque.
